An amoral carnival barker seeks top billing after joining a traveling circus where he seduces a mind reader and fortune teller in the hopes of learning her formerly show-stopping act. He eventually moves on to his own act as a clairvoyant preacher with the help of a grifting psychologist. Based on the novel Nightmare Alley by William Lindsay Gresham. Directed by Edmund Goulding.
