Brennen plays a gorgeous young blonde (but a total bitch) who is lured by the excitement of the carnival business. So she leaves her waitress job at a greasy spoon and joins up with a local carnival. She soon meets all kinds of sordid characters, including the bizarre, physically deformed players of the carnival's freak show. Some of them are monstrous in appearance. Before long she finds herself falling into a web of carnival intrigue: marrying her boss, cheating on him with the ferris wheel operator, getting someone fired, etc. Eventually the freaks decide to take matters into their own hands and she ends up transformed into a bizarre creature, half woman-half monstrosity, who is now the top attraction at the freak show. Her makeup as a deformed freak is decidedly grotesque and cannot be explained by simply having been mugged by the other freaks. It almost hints at some kind of supernatural methodology. SHE FREAK is definitely a reworking of Tod Browning's FREAKS, but it also takes an interesting look at the gritty, behind the scenes carnies who lurk in the shadows. The erotic dance scene is most alluring. From an absolutely gorgeous 35mm color print.
