Zarah Leander. Legendary Hollywood director Douglas Sirk, who helped defined the Golden Age, cut his directorial teeth in Germany, and two of his rare early German films are lovingly restored and presented here. In To New Shores (Willy Birgel. 1937/106 min), a cabaret dancer is sent to a penal colony after being framed for a crime committed by her former lover—but she remains fixated on him despite it all. In La Habanera (Ferdinand Marian. 1937/98 min), the bored wife of a Caribbean oligarch has her passion for life reignited by a visiting doctor from Europe. In German with English subtitles. Both movies includes audio commentary track with film historians. B&w/NR/fullscreen.
